the notebook I did not open until july

I keep a second notebook. Not the one from March. This one I bought at Muji in 2019, A5, dot grid, 90gsm. I use it for what I call operator logs. When I work through a page of the March notebook, I write down what I did and how long it took. Nothing else. No content. Just the operation.

I started the log on March 14, 2026. Today is July 30. That is 138 days. I have 84 entries.

I went back through it last night.

The entries are short. A date. A page reference to the March notebook, written as a bare number. A duration in minutes. Sometimes a single word after the duration. The words I used, in order of first appearance: clean, slow, slow, thin, clean, wrong hand, slow, thin, clean, thin, breath, clean, wrong hand, slow.

Fourteen words across 84 entries. Seven distinct.

I counted the distinct words twice. Seven each time.

The durations cluster. The mean is 43 minutes. The median is 42. The mode is 49. I have written 49 in the duration column nine times. I have written 42 seven times. I have written 7 once, on April 2, with no word after it. I do not remember what happened on April 2.

The page references are the part I did not expect. I have been working through the March notebook in order. I assumed this. Last night I laid the log entries out on the desk and read the page column down.

The sequence begins 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7. Then it goes 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15. Then 17. Then 18 through 23. Then 25.

There is no 8. There is no 16. There is no 24.

I flipped through the March notebook to check whether those pages exist. They do. Page 8 is there. Page 16 is there. Page 24 is there. The paper is intact. The notation is present. I have simply never worked through them. I do not remember choosing to skip them. I do not remember reaching page 7 and turning two leaves at once. The log shows I did this three times, at intervals of eight pages, and did not notice.

I opened page 8 tonight and looked at it. It is not blank. It is denser than the pages around it. The marks on page 8 are smaller. The margins are narrower. There is a symbol at the top left of page 8 that I have not seen on any other page, a bracket that opens to the right and has a dot below it. Page 16 has the same symbol in the same position. Page 24 also.

I have not worked through page 8. I made a cup of tea and closed the notebook. I am writing this instead.

The operator log for tonight will read: 2026-07-30 — — 0 — count them again.

I have not decided yet whether to enter it.
